What is post and rail fencing?

Wooden post and rail fence

Post and rail fencing consists of timber posts, with horizontal timber rails. There are three main types: cleft, half-round and square cut.

It is both attractive and sturdy, and is ideal for perimeter enclosure on large properties, being far cheaper than stone wall. It is strong and tough and can last for many years.

Post and rail fencing is often constructed using rectangular slots (mortices) pre-cut into the sides of posts. This allows easy insertion of rails. This simple method of construction is very time saving.

What is tanalised timber?

Tanalised (or pressure treated) timber is timber that has been pressure impregnated with wood preservative. The system provides long term protection against wood decay and insect attack.

Tanalised timber resists rot, fungus, mould, and insects, as well as extreme weather conditions.
